With this virus we must stay vigilant. We are still learning and so is the virus.

COVID- Related Illness in Children

  • DOH is now investigation 110 cases of what may be a rare COVID- related illness in children
  • Symptoms similar to atypical Kawasaki disease or toxic-shock like syndrome.
  • The illness has tragically taken the lives of three young New Yorkers- a 5 year old boy, a 7 year old boy and an 18 year old girl.

NYS and the DOH are leading a national effort to understand and combat this new syndrome.

So far, 16 other states, Washington DC and six European countries have reported cases as well.

While we believe this illness to be rar, seek care immediately if your child has:

  • Predominant Symptoms:
    • Prolonged fever (more than 5 days)
    • Severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting
    • Bloodshot Eyes
    • Skin Rash
  • Other Symptoms:
    • Change in skin color- becoming pale, patchy, and/or blue
    • Difficulty feeding infants or is too sick to drink fluids
    • Trouble breathing or is breathing very quickly
    • Racing hear or chest pain
    • Lethargy, Irritability or confusion

NYS has issued first - in - nation criteria to healthcare professionals across the state defining this syndrome.

NYS DOH has also directed hospitals to prioritize testing for children with these symptoms.

Children affected >1yo —> 21yo

Governor Cuomo mentioned that he will be releasing a more detailed list of businesses in each phase.
